Remember Britney Spears’ terrible performance at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards? Well, a new tell-all book is revealing that the secret to Britney’s terrible disaster of a performance was tequila - and lots of it!

[Britney] had been planning her routine at the prestigious event for months to prove to the world she had fully recovered from her personal problems.

However, insiders have now revealed she wasn’t mentally ready to perform and was drunk when she went out on stage.

In his new book ‘Britney: Inside the Dream
‘, writer Steve Dennis claims: “Britney herself managed to ruin the most important performance of her life. Hours before the show, her anxieties raged. She decided it was a good idea to start drinking tequila shots to calm her nerves - one after the other.”

Britney’s fragile mental state was also reportedly tested when her ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake came into her dressing room to wish her luck.

Dennis revealed in the book: “Justin was cool and couldn’t have been friendlier, but that wigged her out more.”

Britney Spears these days though, as we know, is a total success story, having successfully battled drugs and alcohol, regained posession of her kids, and is now touring Europ on the ‘Circus’ tour.

New crazy rumors swirling about Britney Spears - apparently Britney Spears thinks her Dad, Jamie Spears is drugging her to keep her from being out and partying! Craziness! What do you think, is Jamie Spears, Britney Spears father, keeping Britney Spears drugged?

“Britney is sure her father is out to get her and that he’s drugging her to turn her into a zombie who won’t fight back,” a source told British magazine Look. “Ever since her breakdown last year when she was hospitalized, she’s been on prescription pills to battle her panic attacks.

“Her doctors have also prescribed anti-anxiety drugs Valium and Ativan to deal with stress and to help her sleep.

“As part of the court-ordered conservatorship, Jamie has to make sure Britney takes the correct dosage because she forgets to take them otherwise. But lately she’s been nodding off randomly in the middle of conversations and is convinced it’s because Jamie’s giving her too much much.”

The source adds that Britney’s friends, “tell her it’s because she’s working so hard and performing every night on her Circus tour.”

A lot of celebrities suffer from depression - and with money, and connections, its easy to get any drugs you want to try and make the pain go away. Here is a list of celebrities who have suffered from depression, and used drugs, prescription or otherwise, to self-medicate.

1. Britney Spears: Spears is a well-known example of a bi-polar or depressive personality who self-medicates with anything from alcohol, prescription drugs, to marijuana.

Several friends of Spears have been told that the singer has taken anti-anxiety medication, “and who knows what she’s on now. This is really a matter of her being unstable, not suicidal … she’s not balanced.”

PEOPLE has learned from multiple sources that the singer also suffered from depression after both her pregnancies. “She had postpartum depression after Preston was born,” says a source who was close to the family during her marriage to Kevin Federline. “

2. Heather Locklear: Recently in the news for a much-publicized DUI, Heather Locklear has apparently been struggling with depression for years.

In June 2008, Locklear entered an Arizona facility for the evaluation and treatment of anxiety and depression. She began taking antidepressants in 2006, following her divorce from Richie Sambora.

3. Owen Wilson: Funnyman Owen Wilson hides a not-so-sunny side of himself, which almost got the better of him during dark days in 2007.

National Enquirer jointly reported Aug. 24 that Wilson, the star of popular comedies including “Wedding Crashers” and “You, Me and Dupree,” had slit his left wrist and taken unidentified pills in an attempt to kill himself.

4. Jim Carrey: Jim Carrey, star of The Ace Ventura movies, has a long history of depression and Prozac.

Carrey says: “I was on Prozac for a long time. It may have helped me out of a jam for a little bit, but people stay on it forever. I had to get off at a certain point because I realized that, you know, everything’s just ok,”
